I went to see the film Bedtime Stories with a friend and our daughters today. The girls chose the film. I probably would have given it a miss if the choice had been mine, because I am not generally a fan of Adam Sandler, who is the male lead and producer.
I'm glad that I went with the flow on this one. Loved it. Laughed out loud... more than a few times, I must admit. It had the perfect mix of nostalgia (his childhood in a 1970's motel with his great Dad); the pathos of the now-grown, dedicated, but go-nowhere shmo; the caricaturesque sleazeball with dollar signs in his eyes, the cuteness of his lisping nephew and niece; and the sincere, wholesome love interest (Keri somebody who I rememember from American TV). Oh! Russell Brand is the best friend and he makes me laugh anyway, just being a Russell Brand-type, and Courtney Cox is the annoyingly organic sister. At minimum, this film was a bright spot on a rainy day.
Laughing out loud in public with zero self-consciousness is good for the soul. When I hear someone else do it, I stop and think "how lovely... what was that about?" When I do it myself, I am bathed in warmth and positivity. Its a brighter day, and a better me.
When is the DVD out? It may just be a must-buy.
