I've been singing all day. You know the Rodgers and Hammerstein song from Oklahoma!...
Oh! what a beautiful mornin'
Oh! What a beautiful day.
I've got a beautiful feelin',
Everything's goin' [our] way!
It's all about today's Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama, of course. I feel incredibly positive, but even more than that, I am grateful that a young, intelligent, energetic, inclusive and courageous person has risen to the challenge of leading my native country; the United States of America. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And I haven't forgotten Joseph Biden, V-P to be, for being everything that Sarah Palin is not. Thank you, Joe.
Without wanting to sound like a flag-waving, ultra-patriotic (gag) geek, I have to be up-front and admit to feeling very proud to be an American today. I am even keeping my two half & half (British/American) children home and missing swim lessons today so that we can watch the inauguration and celebrations on TV together at 4:30 p.m. BST (11:30 a.m. EST). Growing up in England, as they do, they could use a little immersion in over-the-top, American enthusiasm once in a while. What better excuse than this?
Oh, and by the way, for any cynics out there, all the Hollywood celebrities who will be present at the various events in Wash.,D.C., are:
- Voters, Campaigners and Fund-Raisers,
- Very decorative...think of them as giving it a party feeling, and
- Not taking up places that the regular citizen/voter could have had, as Obama has also invited much of the D.C. neighbourhood of low/middle/high income Americans.
Would you really want to watch vast numbers of politicians, lobbyists, corporate tycoons and their spouses on the stage and red carpet? No, I didn't think so.
I'm still humming, smiling and hopeful as I go on the school run.
