Love your blog. Your post about knowing when a girl wants to wear a bra hit home. I remember being floored and confused when my 10 year old asked for a bra--by indirectly talking about gym class and running---with this intent "Figure it out Mom!" look on her face until I put it together. I just was so used to thinking of her as a little girl, I had no idea she was thinking about needing a bra!

Hi Carole,

My 10-year old and I have had a few talks lately about this area, usually brought up by me while driving (keeping things casual). If she gets in the least bit flustered or clams up, I leave it alone. What it does is open the lines of communication between us, so she knows she is allowed to ask these kind of questions and that I am open to answering them.

Moms AND Dads, this is a great way to get over the reluctance on either your part or theirs, to talk about potentially embarrassing topics like bras, period or pimples. Ask a light question that doesn't pin them down. For example, "Are any of the girls in your class wearing bras yet?" or "I know you have had one or two pimples; are your friends getting them too?" Even if she is initially horrified by the question, you will have alerted her that she can talk to you.
