The Christmas break is a great time to give children extra sessions in art; they will have fun while learning about the work of a particular artist and then creating a piece of art in that artist's style. Give yourself some free time to finish shopping, or wind down after the festive celebrations during these morning art workshops. On offer this December:
Henri Matisse, French, 1869 - 1954 Towards the end of his long painting career, Matisse began to flatten out and simplify his images, while still retaining vibrant colour. Poor health made it impossible to paint large canvasses, so he experimented with stencils and paper cut-outs to produce his pictures. You will learn more about Matisse and produce your own artwork in his style, using paper and paint. Think about how a footballer, gymnast or your own family would look in the Matisse style!
Matisse workshop, Year 1 and up, Monday, 19th December 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Course fee £20 includes all materials.
Vincent Van Gogh, Dutch, 1853 - 1890 Toward the end of his life, Van Gogh lived in Arles, in the South of France, where he painted portraits, still life and landscape paintings in loose brushstrokes of stripes and swirls. Starry Night is one of his most recognizable images, but you may also know his Sunflowers.
Part One - Wednesday, 21st December 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Year 1 and up. You will learn about Van Gogh the artist and his style of painting and create your own artwork in a similar style. Course fee £20 includes all materials.
Part Two - Friday, 23rd December 10 p.m. - 1 p.m. Year 5 + up only. Learn more about Van Gogh's treatment of light, colour and line. Develop your image from Part One further and adapt it to canvas. Course fee £23 includes all materials.
Georges Seurat, French, 1859 - 1891 Georges Seurat was a Neo-Impressionist who developed a style of painting called Pointillism. It was based upon the theory of optical blending, using tiny dots of colour placed next to each other to achieve a blended appearance, rather than mixing paint colours on a palette.
Part One, Year 1 and up - Wednesday, 28th December, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. You will learn more about Seurat's dots and create a pointillist painting of your own. Course fee £20 includes all materials.
Part Two, Year 5 and up only. Thursday, 29th December, 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. You will have an opportunity to add greater detail to your painting and fine-tune your colour, light and shadow, still in the pointillist style. Course fee £23 includes all materials.
